Oslo Airport builds new Security Checkpoint
Avinor has entered into an agreement with Sensec Solution AS regarding new technology for the security checkpoint at Oslo Airport. The new check point is expected to be completed by 2028.

Avinor is acquiring new and modern technology for the security checkpoint at Oslo Airport. When the project is completed, travelers will be met with a solution that aims to make the security checkpoint process more efficient and simplified.
"A benefit for travelers is that with the new technology, there is no need to remove electronics from their hand luggage. In the long term, depending on EU regulations, it may also become easier to travel with liquids," says Thorgeir Landevaag, Airport Director at Oslo Airport.
Landevaag explains that the passenger lanes at Oslo Airport are close to the end of their lifespan. In addition, there is also ongoing strategic development work for stricter requirements for technology in security checks led by the EU.
"This will create a safer and smoother travel experience and also ensure that we comply with future international requirements and standards. The goal is to make travel easier for everyone," says the Airport Director.
Ready by 2028
Smiths Detection, a global manufacturer with production for this technology based in Germany, will deliver the technology to Avinor. The delivery consists of new X-ray machines and table solutions with automatic tray return. The supplier Sensec will be responsible for installation and commissioning for ongoing operation, service, and maintenance of both the new X-ray systems and the modern table solutions with automatic tray return system.
The reconstruction of the security checkpoint will start in January 2026 and is planned to be completed by the summer of 2028.
"This means that we will have a long period of reconstruction of the security checkpoint, and that new and old technology will coexist for the next few years. This is a large and complex project that must be carried out while being in full operations at the existing security checkpoint. We will provide good information about any changes for travelers and which security lanes they should use when the construction period starts," says Landevaag.
He emphasizes that the construction will take place in stages, so that there is capacity to maintain good passenger flow and avoid increased waiting times as far as possible.
Advices travelers to check technology
So far, only Oslo Airport is replacing the technology. Avinor has conducted a thorough concept phase to map the needs at the largest airports but currently has no detailed plans for further replacement.
"This is very expensive equipment, and the reason it is most urgent at Oslo Airport is both the lifespan of the equipment and development of regulations. ," he explains.
He also mentions that travellers will encounter old technology at most European airports the coming years.
"This means that you may have to remove items from your hand luggage at other destinations, and it is important to be aware of this when packing for your trip," he concludes
