British Airways opens route to Tromsø
23.5.2024 11:19:49 CEST | The Avinor Group | Press release
British Airways will open a new route from London Heathrow to Tromsø this winter. The route will have two weekly flights from December 1st to March 27th.

"This route also connects Tromsø to the largest oneworld Alliance hub in Europe. The North American market in particular, will now have good accessibility to Tromsø with British Airways' new route. This will benefit the tourism industry in Tromsø, with more well-paying American visitors to Tromsø, as well as resourceful Britons," says Ulv Elbirk, Traffic Developer at Avinor.
"The inclusion of Tromsø in the British Airways portfolio demonstrates that Northern Norway has become an attractive destination for airlines and proves how the city has established itself as a solid winter destination in Europe," says Elbirk.
The route will be operated with an A320neo aircraft to and from British Airways' main terminal Heathrow Terminal 5, with efficient connections to the rest of the world.
“We are excited to welcome Tromsø to our route network – it is a growing winter leisure market thanks to its abundance of cold-weather activities, and we’ll be the only premium carrier operating there from the UK. We’ve optimised the schedule for three- and four-night trips, which we know are perfect for a destination like this,” says Neil Chernoff, British Airways’ Chief Planning and Strategy Officer.
Tromsø popular winter destination
Tromsø Airport, Langnes has been the focal point for the remarkable growth in international traffic to Northern Norway. Monthly figures show a significant increase in the number of passengers to/from abroad, especially during winter. For example, the number of passengers in November and December 2023 increased by an incredible 74 and 82 percent respectively, compared to the same months in 2019. This is a strong indication of the increasing popularity of Troms and Finnmark, and of Northern Norway as an international destination.
Two weekly round trips
British Airways will operate the route with two weekly departures in each direction during the winter season 2024/2025. The flights will take place on Thursdays and Sundays. On Thursdays, departure from London will be at 08:15 and arrival in Tromsø at 13:00. The return flight from Tromsø will depart at 14:00 and land in London at 16:45. On Sundays, departure from London will be at 08:15 and arrival in Tromsø at 12:50. The return flight from Tromsø will depart at 13:40 and land in London at 16:25. The estimated flight time is 3 hours and 35 minutes on Thursdays, and 3 hours and 45 minutes on Sundays.
