Icelandair opens a new gateway from North America to the Arctic
11.2.2026 13:00:00 CET | The Avinor Group | Aktuelt
Icelandair will launch a new direct route between Tromsø and Keflavik starting October 2026. At the same time, the company is making Bergen a year-round destination. This expansion strengthens accessibility from North America to both Northern Norway and Western Norway, particularly during the winter season.

The new route between Tromsø and Iceland will be operated twice a week during the winter schedule and offers good onward connections via Icelandair’s route network to a number of destinations in North America. This marks the first time Icelandair has established a route to Northern Norway.
For Tromsø and the surrounding region, the route means increased international accessibility and a strengthened position as a gateway to the Arctic. At the same time, it becomes easier for travellers from North America to reach Northern Norway through efficient and seamless connections. North America is one of the most important markets outside Europe for the region, and the new route adds capacity during a period when demand for Arctic experiences is high.
– The new route to Tromsø will strengthen Iceland’s position as a natural gateway between Northern Europe and North America. At the same time, it provides a more accessible travel option for travellers in both Norway and Iceland, and it opens the entire Arctic region of Northern Norway to travellers from the other side of the Atlantic. We are delighted to welcome Tromsø to our growing Nordic network, says Bogi Nils Bogason, CEO of Icelandair.
The investment is an important contribution to developing more year-round traffic. Increased winter capacity creates a foundation for further growth in tourism, the experience economy and other business sectors. Improved international connectivity also strengthens competitiveness and provides greater predictability for stakeholders working strategically in international markets.
Bergen becomes a year-round route
At the same time, Icelandair is expanding its service to Bergen by making the route year-round. After several years of extensive operations in spring, summer and autumn, the connection will now also operate throughout the winter season.
The year-round expansion strengthens accessibility to Western Norway from Iceland and North America, contributing to increased international traffic outside the traditional high season. Together with the launch in Tromsø, this creates new opportunities for multi-destination travel within Norway and further strengthens Norway’s position in the North American market throughout the year.
Overall, the two route announcements represent a significant boost to the development of year-round international connectivity to both Northern Norway and Western Norway.
