Dette er de to møtene: 

10 a.m. - 11.30 a.m.: Journalism in Wartime Ukraine – Conversation with the recipients of the 2022 Free Media Awards from Ukraine

Tuesday, 18 October. 

Venue: Fritt Ord, address: Uranienborgveien 2, Oslo

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has had a tremendous influence on the media landscape The participants will try to explain what is happening, and how the war is affecting journalism in Ukraine. What challenges are independent media outlets currently facing? Are they resilient enough to survive?  In many ways, covering this war may feel more like covering a natural disaster than reporting on a political conflict. What is different about reporting from a war? Ukrainian journalists cannot help but feel emotional when covering an invasion of their own country. Can the emotional component cloud their reporting? How can Ukrainian journalists and media outlets combine safety, responsibility and freedom of expression? What about the safety of and conditions for freelance journalists? Russian propaganda-mongers tend to try to dehumanise the situation. How does the propaganda they spread legitimise war crimes?

Participants:

Photographer Evgeniy Maloletka, journalist and author Natalia Gumenyuk, editor-in-chief Katerina Sergatskova (Zaborona), photo- and video journalist Andriy Dubchak. Besides the award winners will Maryana Drach, director, Ukrainian Service, RFE/RL, take part.

 Moderator: Martin Paulsen,head of department, Department of Foreign Languages at the University of Bergen and jury member.

Repression, Russia’s war, Exile – how Belarusian journalists struggle to continue their work

Conversation with the 2021 Free Media Awards recipients from Belarus

Journalists (and human rights activists) have been targeted by Lukashenko, making them victims of his repression. Many of them ended up being held as political prisoners or had to flee the country. Some went to Ukraine. Then Russia invaded Ukraine. Not only has the journalists’ situation deteriorated once again, but the international focus has shifted completely to Ukraine. How do Belarusian journalists cope with these difficulties? How have they been able to continue working under such dire and repressive conditions? And how can they continue to do the important work they do, when they are abroad?

Participants: The journalists Natallja Lubnewskaja (Nasha Niva), Aliaksandra Pushkina (Tut.by) and Daria Chultsova besides Andrei Bastunets (Belarusian Association of Journalists).
