Guadalupe Maravilla
Sound Botánica
18 Mar–07 Aug 2022
Sound Botánica is The Lise Wilhelmsen Art Award-recipient Guadalupe Maravilla’s first solo exhibition in Europe. The exhibition features sculptures, wall art, drawings and sound art. Many of the works can be related to personal events in the artist’s life, with themes such as exile, migration, and healing. In 1984, when he was eight years old, Maravilla arrived in the USA as an unaccompanied, undocumented immigrant. As an adult, he was diagnosed with cancer and underwent both chemotherapy and radiotherapy. At the same time, he gained experience from several alternative practices, which he uses in sound baths and performance works. The exhibition presents 30 works from four major series from Maravilla’s body of work: Tripa Chuca; Embroideries; Disease Throwers; and Retablos.
The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue and is curated by Caroline Ugelstad.
Every Moment Counts
AIDS and its Feelings
18 Feb–22 May 2022
As part of the 2022 Year of Queer Culture in Norway, the Henie Onstad is turning the spotlight on AIDS. AIDS hit the arts field particularly hard. In the 1980s, the AIDS movement laid the foundations for Queer Cultural Theory, and the issue remains a key topic for many artists. In 2022, it will be 50 years since sex between men was decriminalised in Norway. The exhibition Every Moment Counts – AIDS and its Feelings harks back to 1993, when a major exhibition on the topic was presented at the Henie Onstad. This was one of the very first, and largest, exhibitions produced in Europe focusing on the topic of AIDS. The Henie Onstad is now revisiting the theme with a contemporary view and will once again discuss the topic of AIDS with a large-scale group exhibition presenting works from about 60 international artists.
The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue and curated by Ana María Bresciani together with Tommaso Speretta.
Merz! Flux! Pop!
New installation from 30 June 2022
Gallery Merz is a completely new exhibition space dedicated to the German avant-garde artist Kurt Schwitters (1887–1948), his colleagues and successors. Schwitters was one of the most distinctive and versatile artists of the early 20th century. The artistic tactics and strategies he developed have had a huge impact on subsequent generations. The exhibition Merz! Flux! Pop! presents Sparebankstiftelsen DnB’s collection of works by the artist and his colleagues, along with works from the Henie Onstad’s own collections and archives. Curated by Caroline Ugelstad.
Young photographers
9 June–19 Sep 2022
Every year, a new exhibition of recent works from Henie Onstad’s Young Photographer mentor programme is put on display at the museum. The programme is now in its third year and is starting to gain recognition and become well known among aficionados of photography. The exhibition shows works by this year’s participants. The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue published by the Henie Onstad Kunstsenter. Curated by Susanne Østby Sæther.

4 Jun–7 Aug 2022
This summer, the Henie Onstad is inviting children, teens and adults to take part in a major creative project. Welcome to a summer of play, activity, and art at Høvikodden. Further details will be published on hok.no.
Niki de Saint Phalle
16 Sep 2022–12 Feb 2023
Niki de Saint Phalle (1930–2002) was a French-American artist who worked in a multiplicity of media and artistic expressions. She had a major influence internationally, and is one of the 20th century’s biggest icons. This retrospective exhibition is the first presentation of the artist in Norway. The exhibition comprises over 100 works lent by key institutions in the USA and Europe, such as Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Sprengel Museum, Hannover, and MAMAC in Nice, as well as a number of private collectors and in close collaboration with Niki de Saint Phalle Charitable Foundation.
The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue written in Norwegian and English. The catalogue contains newly written texts and is published by the Kontur publishing house, with international distribution through Thames & Hudson. Curated by Caroline Ugelstad.
