Arthur D. Little (ADL) kunngjør i dag at selskapet har blitt tildelt flere høyt prioriterte prosjekter fra den europeiske romfartsorganisasjonen (ESA), for å identifisere de mest lovende tjenesteområdene for neste generasjons satellittkommunikasjonsinfrastruktur (SatCom). ADL vil gjennomføre en omfattende prosess som involverer nøkkelpersoner innenfor transport-, energi-, infrastruktur- og medieindustriene, samt interessenter innen nødtjenestene, for å identifisere og vurdere mulige applikasjonsområder og tjenester som kan leveres via satellitt i det kommende tiåret.

Totalt vil ADL stå ansvarlig for fire studier. Tre av disse er del av det strategiske programmet til Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems (ARTES), «Space Systems for Safety and Security»:

  • Safety of Future Transport
  • Safeguarding Essential Services
  • Satellite Applications for Public Safety

Som en del av sin «Open Consulting» tilnærming vil ADL gjennomføre disse studiene med støtte fra Distretto Tecnologico Aerospaziale (DTA).

Den fjerde studien er en ARTES4.0 Business Application Feasibility Study, og støttes av den norske romfartsorganisasjonen:

ADL vil gjennomføre denne studien i samarbeid med Marlink og CLS.

Samfunnet er sterkt avhengig av telekommunikasjonsnettverk og hensikten med 4S å støtte utviklingen av sikre SatCom-systemer for å bedre robustheten i den digitale infrastrukturen på tvers av Europa og resten av verden, samt tilby innovative tjenester og løsninger. Ettersom bakkenettverk blir mer og mer sårbare for forstyrrelser og angrep, kan integreringen av SatCom-systemer med den eksisterende infrastrukturen føre til at nettverkene forblir stabile og trygge.

Studien The Safety of Future Transport vil fokusere på hvordan den neste generasjon SatCom-systemer kan øke sikkerhet og effektivitet innen de raskt utviklende sektorene luftfart, maritim og jernbane, med potensielle applikasjoner relatert til ubemannede skip og luftfartøy og automatiserte trafikkstyringssystemer. Safeguarding Essential Services vil fokusere på hvordan SatCom kan bidra med å beskytte kritisk infrastruktur som kraftverk og offentlige medier. Satellite Applications for Public Safety vil fokusere på hvordan SatCom kan fungere som støtte til eksisterende iPublic Protection and Disaster Relief (PPDR) nettverk brukt av nød- og redningstjenester.

The Port of the Future er en økonomisk og teknologisk mulighetsstudie for å benytte jordobservasjon og SatCom-tjenester for havneindustrien. Målsetningen er å utvikle en plattform for å overvåke miljøavtrykket i form av luft- og vannkvalitet i havneområdene og en plattform for gi fartøy tilstrekkelig informasjon for effektiv inn- og utseiling fra havneområdene.
