High international traffic this summer

4.9 million travelers used Avinor's airports in July. This is an increase of 3 percent compared to July last year. A large part of the growth originates from foreign tourists traveling to Norway. The total number of flights is approximately the same as last year.

The increase of 3 percent in mainly due to an increase in international traffic. The international passenger traffic is up by 7 percent. Domestic passenger traffic however decreased by 1 percent compared to July last year. “The July traffic to foreign destinations has been stronger than what we expected at the beginning of the summer. It seems as both Norwegians seeking warmer climates and foreign tourists seeking "cooler experiences" have contributed to good growth,” says Gaute Skallerud Riise, Director of Traffic Development at Avinor.

“Although weather-sick Norwegians account for part of the growth, it appears that the growth is driven to an even greater extent by foreign tourists. This is a trend we expect to continue in the coming years,” Riise explains.

Riise explains that the decline among domestic travelers is largely due to a reduction in the number of flights, which in turn has led to an overall smaller supply in the domestic market.

“This has been a development that has taken place over several months, where the domestic market has had a weak development compared to last year, but the positive aspect of this is that the aircrafts that are operating are fuller than before.”

Passenger numbers and flight movements
2,242,188 passengers traveled domestically in July. This is 1 percent fewer than in July last year.

The number of international travelers was 2,696,625, which is 7 percent higher than the previous year's July.

There were 62,092 flight movements in July. This is approximately the same as last year, with no significant change, a change of 0 percent.

Peak season for drone flights
The traffic figures for this month were lower than previous months this year but doubled compared to 2023. In July, 2,208 drone flights were reported in Ninox Drone - Avinor's system for drone management.

“This is a doubling of the number of drone flights from July 2023. Summer is the peak season for drone flights, which these figures also confirm,” says Mats Gjertsen, who leads Avinor's drone program.
