Japan meets Hanover - this goes hand in hand with many friendly relations and a warm welcome in the capital of Lower Saxony. A central link is the twinning between Hanover and Hiroshima, which dates back to 1938. Ever since, relations have been constantly nurtured by various associations, initiatives, peace work and exchange visits. What’s more, Hanover’s Mayor, Stefan Schostok, is Vice-President of the “Mayors for Peace” organization founded by the Mayor of Hiroshima in 1982.
Visible signs of this partnership include: the Peace Bell in the ruins of Hanover’s Aegidienkirche that is struck on August 6 each year to commemorate the atomic bombing, the Japanese tea house in the city park, the popular sushi stand at the Maschsee Lake Festival and the Hiroshima Grove, where the annual Cherry Blossom Festival is held every April.
