Yara med i Bidens klimakoalisjon

Glasgow, 4. november 2021: I dag lanserte en rekke av de største selskapene i verden et felles initiativ om å nå klimamålene ved hjelp av nye typer banebrytende teknologi.

Selskapene som inngår i president Joe Bidens «First Movers Coalition» har en felles visjon om at innovasjon og teknologi er nøkkelen til å nå 1,5-gradersmålet. De har alle forpliktet seg til nullutslippsinnkjøp innen 2030 for å styre markedet inn mot utslippsfrie varer og tjenester.

First Movers Coalition kan bli et viktig verktøy for å nå klimamålene. Vi er en samling av globale selskaper med stor innflytelse i våre sektorer, som vi kollektivt vil bruke til å fremskynde teknologiutviklingen i sektorene som i dag står for de største utslippene. Disse beslutningene må tas i dag for å få effekt innen 2030, derfor er felles innsats avgjørende for å sparke i gang teknologiutviklingen, sier Svein Tore Holsether i Yara.

Initiativet ble annonsert av World Economic Forum (WEF) under klimatoppmøtet i Glasgow denne uken, i samarbeid med John Kerry, spesialutsendingen fra USA.

First Movers Coalition er en plattform hvor en rekke selskaper med globalt fotavtrykk innenfor sine respektive sektorer kan forplikte seg til å gjøre innkjøp som kun er realiserbare dersom vi ser store fremskritt i teknologien. Tidlige tegn på etterspørsel gjør at det kan satses på teknologi og innovasjon med lavere risiko.

Teknologien har gitt oss de viktigste verktøyene for å redusere utslipp og bygge en sterkere mer framtidsrettet økonomi. Skal bedrifter ta sjansen på å lage nye, innovative løsninger må de vite at det er et marked for disse løsningene. Dette initiativet viser at næringslivet tar ansvar og baner vei for hvordan verden skal nå klimamålene. Disse selskapenes betydelige gjennomslagskraft kantransformere verdikjeder slik at vi klarer 1,5 graders målet, sier Børge Brende, president for World Economic Forum.

Åtte nøkkelsektorer

First Movers Coalition har pekt seg ut åtte nøkkelsektorer. Syv av disse, stål, sement, aluminium, kjemikalier, shipping, luftfart og veitransport, utgjør mer enn en tredjedel av det globale CO2-utslippene, og har ikke kostnadseffektive alternativer til fossile drivstoff. Den åttende, direkte luftfangst – som innebærer å fange CO2 direkte fra luften som en slags CO2-støvsuger, kan bidra til å redusere CO2-nivået i atmosfæren og at man raskere når nullutslippsmålet. Det må imidlertid utvikles videre før det er lønnsomt.

Yara skal særlig bidra til å dekarbonisere landbruket og langdistansetransport på havet gjennom utvikling av grønn ammoniakk, sier Holsether.

First Movers Coalition gjør det mulig for en rekke selskaper å forplikte seg til å bygge karbonnøytrale og lønnsomme forsyningskjeder for fremtiden. Initiativet samler også ideelle og ekspertorganisasjoner som bidrar til å skape fremdrift, støtte opp under prosjektet og bidra med innspill til utformingen av prosjektet.
