IRMI Group seized a large volume of counterfeited goods at both production sites and warehouses. In total it was seized over 200.000 packages with counterfeited Unicharm products. IRMI Group was hired from November 2018 to disclose counterfeiting in China. Several months monitoring, digital and physical data, provided good results and disclosed data about the productions and the responsible persons behind the counterfeiting activities. This provided sufficient enough data, enabling enforcement action. The researches and the raid disclosed 2 larger production sites in Quanzhou city, in the Fujian Province. LEA and PSB stopped the production and the responsible personnel were detained.

The battle against counterfeiting

Trade of counterfeits facilitates and creates profit for organized crimes network, and causes large costs for both the government and international companies. The status report 2016 from OECD shows that trade of counterfeiting goods increased from US$461 billion and up to US$509 billion. According to the new status report 2019 from EUIPO, sector research shows great losses within 11 sectors. The total losses are estimated to be around EUR 92 billion per year in the period between 2012 – 2016.

“In increasing digital globalization, we see an increase of counterfeiting goods being sold and exported at higher speed and volume than ever before. And the methods are becoming more advanced and comprehensive. The companies lose major market shares and reputational damage. These are just one of the many consequences.   We wish to contribute and be an alliance partner for these companies, in the battle against the black and grey market.» says May Martinsen, CEO of IRMI Group.

«Counterfeit trade takes away revenues from firms and governments and feeds other criminal activities. It can also jeopardise consumers’ health and safety. Counterfeiters thrive where there is poor governance. It is vital that we do more to protect intellectual property and address corruption» says OECD Public Governance Director, Marcos Bonturi.

Fake items that can impact health and safety include medicine, medical supplies, car parts, aeroplane parts, toys, food and cosmetic brands and electrical goods.
