Tiden runt sekelskiftet 1900 var en omvälvande period i svensk konst. Utställningen Rebeller & Mademoiseller: Toll, Kleen, Rudbeck (4 juni–4 sep) på Bror Hjorths Hus i Uppsala visar konst av tre pionjärer som banat väg för efterkommande generationer av svenska kvinnliga konstnärer. 

Emma Toll (1847–1917), Tyra Kleen (1874–1951) och Märta Rudbeck (1882–1933) fick alla erfara hur de gavs tillträde till det offentliga rummet och samtalet, samtidigt som de hölls tillbaka av patriarkala strukturer i samhället. Alla tre offrade mycket för att bli professionella konstnärer och behålla sin frihet; ingen av dem gifte sig eller fick barn. De uppnådde sina mål genom att de ställde ut regelbundet, fick sälja sina verk och recenserades i dagspressen. Alla tre tillhörde med andra ord de pionjärer som banade väg för efterkommande generationer av svenska kvinnliga konstnärer. Emma Toll ingick 1864 i den första ordinarie klassen för kvinnor vid Konstakademien i Stockholm. Tyra n levde ett kosmopolitiskt liv och reste bland annat till Indien, Indonesien, Västindien och Nordafrika. Märta Rudbeck kammade hem prestigeuppdrag som porträtt- och blomstermålare.

Emma Toll, Tyra Kleen och Märta Rudbeck engagerade sig också i jämställdhetsfrågan och kvinnliga konstnärers arbetsvillkor. 1910 grundas Föreningen Svenska Konstnärinnor för att förbättra utställningsmöjligheterna för kvinnliga konstnärer. Alla tre ingick i föreningen. Föreningen bidrog till att successivt förändra synen på kvinnliga konstnärer, men också till att förskjuta gränsen för vilka roller kvinnor kunde inneha i samhället. De var både rebeller och mademoiseller.

Utställningen bygger på konstvetenskapliga studier utförda av Matilda Eliasson och Anna-Lena Jönsson vid Konstvetenskapliga institutionen på Uppsala universitet och Karin Ström Lehander vid Åbo Akademi. Rebeller & Mademoiseller är producerad av Norrköpings Konstmuseum där den visades under hösten 2021 och våren 2022.
