NGI will contribute cutting-edge expertise on offshore wind in a new research centre

The application to establish a research centre for environmentally friendly energy, the Norwegian Research Centre on Wind Energy (NorthWind), received the thumbs up today from the Research Council. Over the next eight years, the centre will receive NOK 120 million for research and innovation that can make wind power cheaper, more cost-effective and more sustainable.

- We are proud to be part of this research centre with SINTEF, NTNU, NINA and UIO and honoured to be awarded the opportunity to contribute to Norway's Green Transition. Through our offices in the USA, Australia and Norway, NGI has worked internationally with offshore wind for over 10 years and participated in projects with a total capacity of over 30 GW. It is now gratifying to see that the Norwegian business community is investing heavily in offshore wind. We look forward to supporting their ambitions through our international experience and our contribution to green innovations in NorthWind, says CEO of NGI - Norwegian Geotechnical Institute, Lars Andresen.

When the grant for the centre was announced today, Tina Bru, Petroleum and Energy Minister, said that offshore wind can represent great opportunities for the energy nation Norway.

- I have great faith that a long-term research centre with partners from both industry, research and administration will contribute to creating concrete results that can be made great use of, said Bru.

40 business partner

SINTEF Energy in Trondheim is the host institution for NorthWind. As well as NGI, NTNU, the University of Oslo and the Norwegian Institute for Nature research (NINA) are part of the centre. In addition, more than 40 business partners will actively participate in research, management and financing of the centre.

- NGI is fully committed to developing technology and solutions to accelerate our path to a more sustainable energy future. Our researchers will be contributed to multiple activities within the FME, to develop more efficient and cost-effective foundation solutions and provide more environmentally-compatible and innovative solutions for installation into the seabed. The NorthWind FME will be a cornerstone in our research activities for the coming years, helping us to ensure that offshore wind is built and anchored #onsafeground, says Thomas Langford, NGI's director of offshore energy.

Facts on Research Centres for Environmentally Friendly Energy

  • NorthWind is part of the Research Centres for Environmentally Friendly Energy (FME). These centres work with long-term research aimed at renewable energy, energy efficiency, CO2 management and the social sciences.
  • The FME's have the potential for innovation and generating value. The research takes place in close collaboration between research environments, business and administration. International collaboration and research education are important tasks for the centres, which have been founded for a period of up to eight years.

NGI ble formelt opprettet 1. januar 1953, underlagt Norges Teknisk-Naturvitenskapelige Forskningsråd (NTNF). I 1985 ble NGI omgjort til en selvstendig stiftelse. Driftsvirksomheten (forskning og rådgivning) ble 1. januar 2024 overført til Norges Geotekniske Institutt AS, et aksjeselskap som eies 100 % av stiftelsen NGI.

Som en av hovedpartnerne støtter NGI Ingeniører Uten Grenser (IUG) økonomisk og gjennom å bidra med ingeniørkompetanse til IUGs oppdrag for norske bistandsorganisasjoner.
