DFDS: Partnerskab sigter på udvikling af brintfærge

DFDS har sammen med sine partnere ansøgt om EU-støtte til udvikling af en færge, der drives af elektricitet fra et brintbrændselscellesystem, der kun udleder vand. Grøn brint skal produceres af et projekteret offshore vindenergidrevet elektrolyseanlæg i Storkøbenhavn.

En gruppe virksomheder har indgået et samarbejde om at udvikle en 100% brintdrevet færge, som udgangspunkt til DFDS’ rute Oslo-Frederikshavn-København.

Færgen drives af elektricitet fra et brintbrændselscellesystem, der kun udleder vand og kan producere op til 23 MW for at drive færgen.

Partnerskabet har ansøgt om støtte fra EU's Innovationsfond for at fremskynde processen og i lyset af den offentlige interesse i at udvikle sådan teknologi. Da der ikke findes nogen færger af denne art i verden i dag, og der derfor er betydelig usikkerhed forbundet med det, vil udviklingen af ​​færgen kræve offentlig involvering. Men hvis projektet udvikler sig som forventet, kunne færgen være i fuld drift på ruten eller andetsteds allerede i 2027.

Brintet produceres lokalt i Storkøbenhavn på basis af havvind, og projektet vil undersøge, hvordan man optimalt kan integrere det med det lokale energisystem.

Færgen, der har arbejdsnavnet Europa Seaways, er designet til 1.800 passagerer og har kapacitet til 120 lastvogne eller 380 biler.
