Going to Bergen this weekend? Take public transport
8.5.2026 07:44:57 CEST | Statens vegvesen | Pressemelding
The Fløyfjell Tunnel will be closed in the direction of the city centre throughout the entire weekend. NPRA and Skyss are urging everyone to use public transport to avoid traffic chaos in the city centre.

“This is a weekend where we’re really asking people to leave the car at home. With the southbound bore towards the city centre closed and major events taking place in town, queues could build up and spread far out into the road network,” says head of section Jørn Kristian Engebø at NPRA.
Statens vegvesen warns that there will be queues throughout the entire weekend.
He appeal applies particularly to travellers coming from Åsane and areas north of Bergen heading into the city centre. Those planning to drive to southern Bergen are advised to travel via Arna and Grimesvingane.
Closing Friday at 17:00
The southbound bore of the Fløyfjell Tunnel will close from 17:00 on Friday 8 May, and reopen on Monday 11 May at 05:30. The work in the tunnel involves blasting, concrete casting and asphalting, and is too extensive to be carried out as night work.
The Fløyfjell Tunnel is old and requires major upgrades to remain safe in the years ahead. Work on the tunnel has already involved periods of night closures, and road users must be prepared for this to continue throughout 2026.
Buses and trains have ample capacity
On Saturday, major events have been planned in Bergen city centre, with a free concert featuring Tobias Sten and a big-screen showing of the cup final at Torgallmenningen. Many people are therefore expected to travel into the city on Saturday.
Skyss urges everyone who has the option to take the bus instead of driving. You should allow a bit of extra time to get around on these days.
The train from Arna to the city centre takes seven minutes and is scheduled to run as normal throughout the weekend. This can be a good alternative for avoiding queues.
How traffic will be affected
•The southbound bore of the Fløyfjell Tunnel (towards Bergen city centre) will be closed for the entire period.
•The northbound bore (from the city centre towards Åsane) is open, with only brief, temporary stoppages overnight into Saturday in connection with blasting work.
•All traffic from the north (Åsane and Sandviken) heading towards Bergen city centre or the southern districts should use county road 587 Hardangervegen (Grimesvingane). This is the main diversion route and clearly the best option.
•Diversion via Sandviken and Bryggen is not recommended and will result in major queues and long waiting times.
•Traffic wardens will be deployed at central junctions in Bergen city centre and along Grimesvingane to direct traffic.
