The Fjord Season Has Begun
This is no April Fool’s joke – today marks the start of the fjord season for Havila Voyages as Havila Castor visits the UNESCO World Heritage Site Geirangerfjord emission-free and silent.

On June 2, 2022, Havila Castor became the first cruise ship to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site Geirangerfjord emission-free. At that time, there were still four years left until the Norwegian authorities’ requirements for emission-free sailings in the World Heritage areas were to take effect. In the autumn of 2024, the government postponed these requirements to 2032.
“Despite the government’s weak assessment of the value of emission-free sailings in the World Heritage areas, we continue to sail into this area on battery power – completely emission-free and silent”, says Bent Martini, CEO of Havila Voyages.
“We are still the only ones able to meet the requirements that have now been postponed until 2032, and we are proud to do our part to preserve our magnificent fjords for future generations”.
Today, April 1, 2025, Havila Castor sails into Geirangerfjord for the first time this season. Previously, Geirangerfjord was visited from June to September, but this year Havila Voyages has extended the season to include April and May as well.
“It has been our desire to offer our guests even more opportunities to visit Geirangerfjord in a truly unique way, without any emissions. Additionally, those who choose to travel in April and May will experience the spectacular spring blossoming”, says Martini.
Spring Sailings Also in 2026
Havila Voyages has already decided to extend the fjord season to include April and May in 2026 as well.
“One of the reasons many choose to travel with us is precisely the visit to Geirangerfjord. We are starting the 2025 season in Geirangerfjord today, and we are pleased to announce that we will be doing the same next season. This also contributes to local value creation with more trips to Geiranger each season.
“Geirangerfjord offers absolutely spectacular scenery, providing our guests, both domestic and international, with a truly unique experience”, concludes Martini.
