Kunstsilo Presents a Landmark Exhibition of Mette Tronvoll's Photographic Art
On Thursday, January 30, 2025, Kunstsilo will unveil a major exhibition featuring the celebrated Norwegian photographer Mette Tronvoll (f.1965). This marks Tronvoll's first museum exhibition in Norway in over a decade, showcasing an entirely new body of work alongside a curated selection of her earlier pieces.
The centerpiece of the exhibition is Tronvoll's latest series, a result of several visits to Hidra, a picturesque island off the coast of Flekkefjord in Southern Norway. Over the past two years, Tronvoll has revisited the island repeatedly to create photographs that capture its coastal culture, nature, and the profound transformations experienced by its community. The series chronicles four distinct phases of the island's history: prehistoric times, the late 18th century (circa 1777), World War II (1940–45), and the island's contemporary life in 2023–2024.
“I am concerned with humanity's connection to nature”,Tronvoll explains. “The essence of photography lies in time—the depiction of time over an extended period and into the timeless. Nature itself is a theme, serving as an expression of the timeless. Ideas about time will be presented as a circular narrative in the exhibition.”
The exhibition also highlights “Age 2024”, an extension of Tronvoll's celebrated “AGE Women 25–90” series from 1994. In this project, Tronvoll revisits portraits taken over 30 years ago, photographing some of the same subjects again to explore how time and experience leave their mark on the individuals.
Tronvoll is renowned for her commitment to analog color photography, an approach that demands meticulous craftsmanship. Collaborating with master printers like Dagmar Miethke, working many years for Grieger in Düsseldorf, she produces large-format prints that exemplify her dedication to the medium. This extensive exhibition will span 350 m² at Kunstsilo and feature nearly 90 works. Tronvoll is also well represented in Kunstsilo’s own collection, The Tangen Collection, with 60 works.
An Internationally Acclaimed Artist
Mette Tronvoll's work has been exhibited in prestigious institutions worldwide, including the National Museum in Oslo, Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden Baden, Künstlerhaus Bethanien Berlin, SK Stiftung Kultur Köln and the New York Public Library. Her art is featured in prominent collections such as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the National Museum in Oslo, Astrup Fearnley Museet in Oslo and KODE in Bergen. This new exhibition at Kunstsilo further cements her reputation as one of Norway’s most influential contemporary artists.
