Join us for the 15th Annual Peace Address from 16.00-18.00 on 12 November at PRIO as we host Harvard Professor Erica Chenoweth, an international expert in political violence and mass movements. The address presents a unique opportunity to hear from one of today’s foremost thinkers on the role of civil society in shaping the global democratic landscape.

Chenoweth is an award-winning scholar who has been ranked among Foreign Policy’s top 100 Global Thinkers. They have published extensively on social movements, civil resistance, and state repression.

In this engaging discussion, Chenoweth will delve into the power of grassroots mobilization and whether it can shift the tide toward democratic outcomes – even in challenging environments. Exactly a week after the US presidential election, the talk will cover insights from this election and discuss its impact on the future.

Secretary General of Norwegian People's Aid and former Norwegian politician Raymond Johansen, PRIO Director Henrik Urdal and PRIO Senior Researcher Haakon Gjerløw, will join Erica Chenoweth for a panel discussion after the address.

The Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) conducts research on the conditions for peaceful relations between states, groups and people.

Researchers at PRIO seek to understand the processes that bring societies together or split them apart. We explore how conflicts erupt and how they can be resolved; we investigate how different kinds of violence affect people; and we examine how societies tackle crises – and the threat of crisis. We document general trends, seek to understand processes, and inform concrete responses.

PRIO is committed to academic excellence. We aim to develop theoretical insights, refine research methodologies, and communicate our findings widely. We see this academic excellence as paramount to having a meaningful impact on society.
