A primary global Rainforest Conference in Oslo
President Joe Biden’s Global Climate Envoy John Podesta and Colombia's Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development Susana Muhamad are among the global leaders attending the Oslo Tropical Forest Forum (OTFF) on June 25-26 to promote the fight for the world's rainforests.
The Oslo Tropical Forest Forum (OTFF) is the world's largest rainforest conference, held every other year. The conference gathers 400 forest experts, environment and climate ministers, policymakers, multilateral institutions, civil society, indigenous peoples, and the private sector from around the world to discuss measures and new solutions to protect the vital rainforests.
The rainforest is a guarantor of a livable climate and biodiversity but is being destroyed due to the high demand for raw materials such as food and animal feed, timber and paper, metals, oil, and gas. In many cases, poverty is a major driver of deforestation. Road construction and hydropower plants are also significant causes.
Rainforests are essential for maintaining a liveable climate and preserving biodiversity, but they are being rapidly destroyed due to the high demand for raw materials like food, animal feed, timber, paper, metals, oil, and gas. In many instances, poverty drives deforestation. Infrastructure projects such as road construction and hydropower plants contribute substantially to this environmental degradation.
Conference participants will highlight challenges, share successes, and propose concrete measures to combat deforestation and environmental crime. Key topics include enhanced forest monitoring, ensuring indigenous peoples and local communities meaningful role in rainforest management, and addressing the root causes deforestation.
