Norwegian Fast Charger with Formula E Technology
The Norwegian pioneer in mobile fast charging, Nordic Booster, has developed the world’s first mobile and scalable fast charger with integrated batteries - Hummingbird®. The battery technology originates from the electric racing championship Formula E. It ensures the ability to meet future needs as the electric vehicle fleet evolves.
Electric construction machinery and trucks are continually evolving. In line with developments by major machinery and vehicle manufacturers, both charging capacity and battery sizes increase each year. The latest generation of Hummingbird® utilizes a unique production method, allowing for the expansion of both battery and charging capacities as needs change in the years ahead. This unparalleled scalability and modularity ensure the product’s longevity.
“We aim to offer a mobile charging solution that works just as effectively today as it will in 2030,” says Jannik Stanger, Chief Technology Officer and co-founder of the company. When we introduced the world’s first mobile fast charger in 2021, few could anticipate the growth of heavier electric construction machinery and trucks. What was considered high charging power in the construction sector back in 2021 may no longer suffice for larger machines today. With our latest mobile fast charger, we can easily expand both battery and fast charging capacity in step with developments from machine manufacturers. Additionally, this solution can be delivered as a large power bank for operating other construction equipment.
Nordic Booster unveiled its newest mobile fast charger during the Vei og Anlegg trade fair at Nova Spektrum Lillestrøm. According to Trond Skaufel, the managing director, the reception from the contractor industry was overwhelming.
“We find that more and more contractors recognize the feasibility of using electric construction machinery. Our solutions enable fast charging in locations where grid power capacity is typically insufficient. Market feedback highlights the importance for contractors to expand their chargers, given the ongoing machine advancements that make it challenging to predict what will work well three years from now.
The choice of battery technology is currently something that entrepreneurs have limited experience with. Nordic Booster initially began producing battery packs for the maritime industry and was among the first to achieve DNV certification for batteries. Safety and longevity are crucial factors when selecting batteries for use in construction and infrastructure. The company is the exclusive distributor in Scandinavia of Immersion Cooled batteries from Xing Mobility.
These battery systems have truly unique properties when it comes to safety, lifespan, temperature control, and the ability to deliver significant energy over extended periods. The battery cells, of which there are thousands in such systems, are submerged in a special oil. The liquid is always in direct contact with all the battery cells, which distinguishes it from more traditional liquid-cooled batteries that cool a plate and partially transfer the temperature to the cells.
The battery technology originates from the racing environment, developed for Formula E, the electric championship equivalent to Formula 1. These batteries significantly accelerate charging and are among the most robust on the market. This makes our products suitable for use in tunnels, hot climates, or other environments with significant external influences.
With this unique technology, we are ready to electrify the construction and infrastructure market in Europe as well, says Jannik Stanger.
