A conversation with Nima Elbagir, CNN's Chief Investigative Correspondent.

Fake news, disinformation campaigns and ChatGPT are part of today’s fog of war. Navigating the truth is harder than ever. In this fractured information space, influencing policy with the right information is a daunting task.

CNN’s multi-award winning Chief International Investigative Correspondent, Nima Elbagir, fearlessly confronts this challenge every day reporting on the frontlines of Africa and the Middle East. She has exposed modern day slavery in Libya, child labour in Congo and unearthed mass graves in Sudan.

Her reporting on human rights abuses have been extensively referenced by lawmakers. Sudanese-born, Elbagir’s background gives her access to often hard-to-reach conflict areas, and brings a vital Global South perspective to international conversations.

Nima Elbagir will share unique insights based on her groundbreaking stories, and tell what it takes to make decisionmakers listen.

Kjersti Løken Stavrum will join Nima Elbagir and PRIO Director Henrik Urdal for a panel discussion after the address. Stravrum is CEO of Tinius Trust and was Chair of the Norwegian Government’s Commission on Freedom of Speech. She has also been Chair of Norwegian PEN and Secretary General of the Norwegian Press Association.

Live music at the event will be performed by Aowafy Orchestra, an Oslo-based band playing East African Afrobeat, combined with jazz, soul and funk.

Also showcasing at the event is the Norwegian-Sudanese visual artist, Khalid Shatta. Originally from the Nuba mountains in Sudan, Shatta is known for his large canvases, colourful motifs and modernist art.

The event will be followed by a reception.

The Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) conducts research on the conditions for peaceful relations between states, groups and people.

Researchers at PRIO seek to understand the processes that bring societies together or split them apart. We explore how conflicts erupt and how they can be resolved; we investigate how different kinds of violence affect people; and we examine how societies tackle crises – and the threat of crisis. We document general trends, seek to understand processes, and inform concrete responses.

PRIO is committed to academic excellence. We aim to develop theoretical insights, refine research methodologies, and communicate our findings widely. We see this academic excellence as paramount to having a meaningful impact on society.
