“2019 Göbeklitepe Year”

The Embassy of the Republic of Turkey organized an event yesterday at the University of Oslo with a lecture by Turkish Professor Necmi Karul from Istanbul University titled “Göbeklitepe, Zero Point in Time” and a lecture by Norwegian Professor Manfred Heun from Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) titled “Pinpointing the beginning of plant domestication; EINkorn & Karacadağ”. The event took place within the framework of the “2019 Göbeklitepe Year” declared by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey.
In his opening remarks, Fazlı Çorman, Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey, touched upon the importance of the excavations and findings in Archeological Site Göbeklitepe, which was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2018. Ambassador Çorman also stated his appreciation of the bilateral relations between Turkey and Norway and said that Turkey is always ready for cooperation with the Norwegian authorities to further improve those relations.
The event was also attended by experts such as Mr. Håkon Glørstad, Director of the Cultural History Museum, Ms. Anne Lene Melheim, Archaeologist and the Head of the Archaeology Department at the Cultural History Museum, Professor II Mr. Ivar Neumann, (appointed Director of the Fridtjof Nansen Institute) and Professor Bernt Brendemoen, the former Chair of the Turkish Studies Department at the University of Oslo.
