Bergen makes a match with Liverpool

Avinor’s long-term partner, Widerøe, will be kicking off a new direct link between Norway’s second-busiest airport and Liverpool, home to two of the UK’s and indeed the world’s most famous football teams – Liverpool and Everton. Utilising its fleet of factory-fresh 114-seat E190-E2s, the regional carrier is set to launch Scandinavia’s first connection to Liverpool on 17 August.
“Announcing Widerøe’s fifth new route from Bergen this year is testament to the confidence our partner has in the growing popularity of our region. Indeed this route will be the first Scandinavian connection to a significant number of energy businesses located in the UK maritime city,” enthuses Jasper Spruit, VP Traffic Development, Avinor. “Scandinavians are great lovers of football, so it feels like we’re winning the World Cup being able to offer supporters a direct link to the home of two of their favourite teams, in fact I understand Bergen holds the largest number of Liverpool supporters in Scandinavia.”
Facing no competition on the new city pair, Liverpool will become Widerøe’s 19th route from Bergen. Further establishing the UK’s position as the Norwegian gateway’s fifth largest country market, the airline introduces the 10th link to the UK from Norway’s south-west coastal city. As a result of Widerøe’s new twice-weekly service, Bergen will offer close to 4,000 weekly seats to the Western European country.
As the first service to be operated to a UK regional airport with Widerøe’s new generation aircraft, the development will aid Avinor in continuing its sustainability goals and a further reduction of its environmental footprint.
